Friday night at Addington Raceway delivered a very special moment for the Off n Racing team and a fantastic group of owners, with Chiggsy producing a brilliant winning performance on debut.

Drawing the coveted barrier one, leading driver Blair Orange made the most of the inside gate early. Chiggsy showed good gate speed to hold his position before settling perfectly in the trail behind the leader, an ideal trip for a horse having his first raceday start.

Turning for home, Blair angled Chiggsy into the clear and once he balanced up, the response was immediate. In what turned into a walk-and-sprint affair, Chiggsy had to produce a sharp turn of foot to chase down the leader, a very smart horse in his own right.

He won by only a head, but it was a performance full of merit, showing determination and a real will to win to run down the leader late in the straight.

The victory came in Race 3 at Addington on Friday 13th March 2026, the WOODLANDS STUD “Knows The Importance of Team Teal” Mobile Pace. In a fitting twist of fate, Chiggsy was bred and sold by Woodlands Stud at the 2025 NZB Standardbred Karaka Yearling Sale, where he was secured for $37,500.Purchased for $37,500, Chiggsy is a perfect example that you don’t need to spend a fortune at the yearling sales to find a talented racehorse, with the right eye, the right team and the right development programme.

Adding further merit to the performance, Chiggsy was only a two-year-old on debut and became just the fourth 2YO colt to win a race in New Zealand in 2026.For Off n Racing, the result is particularly satisfying. Chiggsy was identified and selected at the Karaka Yearling Sales last year, and to have him purchased, developed through the Off n Racing programme, and already racing, and winning, as a two-year-old highlights exactly what the system is designed to achieve.

Reflecting on the journey, Andrew Fitzgerald of Off n Racing said the result was incredibly rewarding after identifying the colt at Karaka.

“From the moment we inspected him at the sales, he was a colt we really liked. He had great presence, a good attitude and moved well. To pick him out at the sales and see him progress through the Off n Racing programme to already be racing and winning as a two-year-old is very satisfying for everyone involved.”

A huge credit must go to trainers Hayden and Amanda Cullen, who had the colt presented in outstanding order for his raceday debut.

The victory sparked huge celebrations from Chiggsy’s 66-strong ownership group, many of whom have followed his journey from the Karaka Yearling Sales right through to raceday. The Marsh boys, father and son, even drove up from Dunedin especially for the race, later describing the night as “the best night ever.”

With 66 owners sharing the journey, Chiggsy’s win perfectly captures what modern racehorse ownership can look like.

With one start and one win, Chiggsy has made the perfect start to his career and looks a horse with a bright future ahead as he continues to develop.

For the 66 owners already involved, Friday night was a moment they will remember for a long time. Standing in the birdcage, cheering home a horse they have followed from the sales ring to raceday success, is what racehorse ownership is all about.
